About me: the fine print
Note: this long, windy and somewhat defensive text should not need to be here, as far as I'm concerned. However, some past employers have broken off contact with me for reasons not related to my work. Since they apparently think there are issues with me, it seems best to get this out in the open.
If you (or an HR department) google me, you will see some things you may find alarming at first.
These things are not alarming, as far as I'm concerned.
I have always had good, problem free, constructive relationships with colleagues and employers. And I plan to keep on doing that. (It is an essential part of what keeps this line of work rewarding and fun.)
In my private life I mostly have good, problem free, constructive relationships with people around me, too. I can say I'm pretty well liked and respected by almost everyone.
So what is the 'problem'?
- I have opinions on a 'difficult' subject, because I happen to have gained expertise on that subject, over the years. (These opinions do not generally affect my daily life and my interactions with the people around me. They just mean I spend time 'debating' and informing people how we as a society -or as individuals- should deal with that subject.)
- Very, very, very many people are -unlike me- scared to even voice an opinion on related subjects.
- Because of the eerie silence surrounding it (and the fact that I am trying to promote 'normal' discussion among everyone), I am one of the few targets for certain simplistic people to point their anger at.
The key word here is 'simplistic'. There are a lot of people on the internet who do not care about thinking their statements through or backing them up with facts. Certain people just seem to need to create enemies, and are tainting my name in the process.
This results in texts (google results) which:
- make me seem like an opinionated, well-spoken and respected person if you care to look behind these google results for more than 10 minutes and make a distinction between informed opinions and fabricated rants;
- but make me seem like a dangerous person to be associated with if you only scan these google results for 10 seconds.
Some employers cannot deal with this. So far, there has not been anyone who told me directly that what I say or do is dangerous or wrong. However, there have been employers who are scared of being associated with me.
(Think about that for a minute. Noone thinks badly of me. However, many are afraid that someone else will, which will somehow reflect badly on them, and therefore they choose avoid me. That, or they avoid me just because my name is linked with a 'scary' subject and they don't want to think about it.)
I'm sorry, but I do not wish to play these games. I wish to not censor myself and I wish not to value anyone's fear of perceived damage to their commercial interest over the exercising of my freedom of speech in a way that is useful and valuable. There are far too many cases already of 'self censorship in commercial interests, which is actually detrimental to society as a whole', in this day and age.
If you come across this issue, or have people come to you suggesting that I'm dangerous... I respectfully suggest that you try and see that I am not actually a problem. If you can't do that, then... well, we have a problem. If you want to work out that problem constructively, I do too. If you don't: you're on your own.
And if there was a way to properly explain this to every employer before they hired me, so as to avoid any awkward situation on the way, I would.
However, experience has so far taught me that 'speaking about the issue is making it bigger' and that some people just wish to not (officially) know about anything, because that is the best way they can ignore it.
(Which I actually agree with.)
